DIY Camera Equipment

Ever spend hours just looking at photography equipment in a B&H photo catalog or on Calumetphoto.com or another awesome photo website? Well I for one have a wish list on those sites as long as santa's naughty list (which we know has to be 800 miles long)! So, I thought I'd create a few small things I have on my wish list for under $10 and guess what? They work!!! I created two camera flash diffusers.

The first is a Beauty dish, Made with a paper plate and toothpicks, all things we have lying around the house right? Here is B&H's off camera flash beauty dish.

Super awesome product, now for my rendition of the beauty dish step by step!

1. Take your paper plate and measure an opening for your off camera flash to slide into the middle of your plate.

2.Take an exacto knife or any other cutting utensil and cut out an opening for your flash.
3. Slide your flash inside the opening like so.
4. Cut out a circle either from a paper plate, or another paper bowl. Then take took picks and stick them in the circle you cut out and the plate making a circle around your flash opening. Like so.

Tada! Now I know you're dying to see how it works, well never fear, I got mama fish to model for me :)
1. Without the beauty dish.
2.With the beauty dish.
HUGE difference right?! The flash is so even her face just glows even with the silly face she is making! :)

Now don't fret those with an on camera flash, I did not forget about you, I have a diffuser idea for you too! :) So, remember those old film canisters you have lying around from back in the day? Well today you get to put them to good use!
1. Take your old film canister and cut a slit in the canister big enough to slide over your flash. Easy right?

And look at that! Now, to see the result...
1. Without the diffuser
2. With the diffuser
The result of the diffuser, nice even color all over the place.

So, easy tricks that are cheap and make your portraits look awesome! I'll be sure to show you more samples later on. :)
